Double Vision

Seeing double can be much more than a troublesome visual problem. It can be a sign of a much greater problem. Since there are many potential causes for double vision, it is important to see an experienced eye care professional to sort out why this is happening.

This condition, also known as diplopia, occurs when the left and right eye are not working together properly. Overindulging in alcohol or excessive fatigue can cause this. In these cases it is temporary and vision should return to normal once the effects of the alcohol has worn off or the fatigue has been resolved with proper rest.

If the double vision persists for a longer period of time, it may be a sign of a larger problem. Some potential causes of this condition include:

  • Irregularly shaped corneas
  • Excessively dry eyes
  • Stroke
  • Head injury
  • Brain tumor, swelling or aneurysm
  • Refractive surgery
  • Cranial nerve palsies
  • Cataracts
